Generosity
January 20th, 2012
New York has some of the best nightlife in the world. But there are certain venues that are real showstoppers! I recently attended an incredible event hosted by the UJA at Capitale located on the Lower East Side. This gorgeous Beaux Arts landmark formerly housed the Bowery Savings Bank. The space is amazing to say the least, with its original details of the bank such as the 65 foot ceiling and marble Corinthian columns utilized so well to create a stunning event space. The perfect lighting bouncing off the marble mosaic floors seems to dance with you to the music, and there is truly eye candy everywhere.

The UJA really outdid themselves hosting the “Seventh Annual Generosity Signature Event” at Capitale. The event, aptly titled “Generosity,” was a social gathering to raise money and show support for the UJA, which is benefactor to more than 100 agencies around the world. Not only do they collect $200 from attendees on this night for financial aid towards these agencies, but they aim to make the agencies they support to be more self-sustainable. Even though they receive financial aid from the UJA, the beneficiaries are encouraged to keep their identities and continue to do their work without losing their names under the guise of their benefactor.
The event coordinators came up with some clever ways to educate attendees about why its so important to keep supporting the cause. They had people walking around with drink coupons who would request a few minutes of an attendees time and listen to some information about the UJA causes. Then they handed over the coupon to get a free shot-glass. There was also a large screen which showed information about the UJA and its work, followed by the opportunity for attendees to pledge their support by texting it! When they would send the text, the amount and their name showed up on the screen like a Twitter feed. Amazing!

The night couldn’t have ended better than a gorgeous candy bar with a spread of sweets and candy by Michael Scott Catering. It was a great night that I found to not only be about generosity, but gratitude as well. I am very proud to support the UJA and can’t wait to see what exciting things it will do next to help worthy causes in the world.

Happy Holidays From The Meier Group
December 23rd, 2011
As everyone gears up for the holidays, we find the spirit of the season on faces, inplaces, on storefront windows and especially in homes in Manhattan. So my team and I were very excited to go see one of the most amazingly decorated apartments in NY. It is located at The Vermeer in Chelsea at 77 7th Avenue. I’m talking about a cornucopia of Christmas decorations, lights, tree, toy train set under the tree and so much for the eyes to see you don’t know where it all begins and ends. I brought over my professional photographer and had a photo shoot done of this amazing apartment.
From all of us at The Meier Group, we wish you a happy, healthy and safe holiday weekend with your friends and family!

All Spruced Up
December 15th, 2011
Frank Gehry is one of the more prolific architects of our time. From the Disney Hall in LA, to The Guggenheim Museum in Bilbao Spain, to the IAC building on the West Side Highway, Gehry has left his mark on modern architecture with his distinct style. An architect once described his technique to me as similar to the challenge of taking a sheet of paper, crumpling it up and then working with a team of designers and engineers to derive a viable structure out of the crumpled design. If you look at his structures it’s possible to imagine Gehry conceives of such an order within the randomness of chaos.
The Pritzker Prize winning Gehry has worked his magic yet again with a building he designed in the Financial District. The UJA-Federation of New York’s Real Estate & Allied Trades Division Sites and Sounds Programs recently provided an very exclusive tour of Gehry’s building at 8 Spruce Street, also known as “New York by Gehry.” Our group consisted of large UJA donors and included the likes of Martin Meyer, Vice Chairman of Colliers International, Andrew J. Singer, Chariman and CEO of The Singer & Bassuk Organization and Alfonso Kimche, Co-Founder of NHF.

“New York by Gehry” is a 76 story tower that has been classified as one of the tallest residential towers in the Western Hemisphere. In fact, when I looked at the 900 foot building I realized its the same height I descend from when I land my Cessna in New Jersey. With a frame of reinforced concrete, and wavelike stainless steel whose reflective light give it an appearance of almost moving in its place, 8 Spruce Street has been praised as the best thing to grace Downtown since the Woolworth building. With 1,000,000 SF of floor area, the New York by Gehry features a public elementary school within the first five floors of the building, a 903 unit luxury rentals residential tower above the school, as well as a hospital. It was fun getting private access to tour the residential units. If you are considering moving to the neighborhood and want to take a look at the residential units at 8 Spruce Street, please feel free to give me a call at 917-209-4300 or email me at mmeier@meiergroupnyc.com
Next time you are downtown, definitely take the time to check out 8 Spruce Street. Or at the very least, take the time to look at the changing Downtown New York skyline. We have come a long way since a decade ago, and clearly Downtown is looking up!

Secrets of Success
December 14th, 2011
I recently attended an event hosted by the UJA Spotlight Circle division which featured the Editorial Director of visionary for Billboard Magazine, Bill Werde. Mr. Werde is a leader in his industry and I was very excited to hear about his background and experiences in his field.

He spoke of his start in the business world, and his story contained the similar intelligent risk-taking that we see with many successful people. Mr. Werde gave up a relatively stable situation in one city to leave everything behind and start over in Queens, NY in a smaller basement apartment with a broken toilet. He was happily working as an Associate Editor for Rolling Stone Magazine when he was approached by Billboard Magazine. They wanted to recruit him; however Mr. Werde didn’t think much of the magazine at the time which he felt was outdated and not very relevant. After declining the offer, he was approached again and basically was told that HE could be the person who can steer the ship of the Billboard brand toward a more profitable and powerful direction. He accepted the challenge, and then went on to do just that. He first joined as a Senior News Editor and rose to Deputy Editor and then Executive Editor of the brand.

At the UJA event, Mr. Werde asked everyone why they had attended. Most people answered that, like me, they were there to network and meet successful people. When they asked Mr. Werde what his secrets for success are, he noted that he’s been fortunate enough to learn from a lot of other successful people as well. The common thread among those people was the fact that they engaged themselves in what they were best at. They chose businesses that utilized their best strengths, and they delegated tasks at which they were not as skilled to other people. He also emphasized the importance of knowing your market and customer base.
My favorite pearl of wisdom Mr. Werde gifted us with was that successful people understand the value of the team they work with. They value people and what they bring to the table, even above and beyond an idea or concept. Working with a great team is a commodity, and successful people keep and nurture the commodity. Based on those measures, I have invested in great commodities with my Meier Group team and stay consistently excited about the future of our production. The secrets work!

Deal of the Year!
December 6th, 2011
This is not the forum where I talk too much shop. I prefer to use this space to share my fun experiences as a luxury broker in New York City. Every so often though…a deal comes across my table that is way too good to not give it an extra loud shout out to everybody.
I just listed a 4,500 square foot Chelsea loft in a pre-war building with original details. First I’ll tell you whats really good about it; then I’ll tell you the best part about it. The space, which is the ENTIRE fifth floor, has super high loft ceilings with original beams, huge windows that let in a lot of light and tons of storage space. But wait there’s more. This is only one section of this massive unit that also comes with a studio/office in the other part of the space. Since you have your own private elevator entry into the loft and several
other egresses, you can customize your own private entrance into the office/studio as well. Its a super flexible layout and the bones of this unit offer everything your imagination, and creative interior designer, can conjure.
So now the best part: the price. The seller wants to sell this yesterday, and has allowed me to price it accordingly at well below $1K a foot. Its a unit you just have to see for yourself, and if you are an investor and a financially capable buyer you should see it ASAP. As an investor for many years, I would gladly snatch this up myself if I weren’t committed in other investments.
So this blog entry is a little off the beaten path, but when the deal is this sweet I am happy to let all of my private and loyal clients in on it first.

2011: Grateful, Happy, Blessed!
December 5th, 2011
We are between Thanksgiving and New Year. The timing of the
Thanksgiving holiday so close to the culmination of the year and the start of a new year makes perfect sense. We get around five weeks to think about all the year has brought us, where we are presently and the goals we are working towards for the future. Our collective focus is on family gatherings, celebrations, holiday feasts, gifts and the appreciation of the true value of time. In the real estate industry time certainly is money; however, we historically see a slowdown in activity during this period, and an uptick in buyer and seller activity in January of the New Year. It’s a new year and a fresh start to get the most out of our time both personally and professionally, which gives people the impetus to finally make brave moves to improve their life. I have come across “45 Most Powerful Images of 2011.” You may like them or not, but you will certainly have the opportunity to be grateful for all the blessings in your life after looking at these pics; and if you don’t take this opportunity, a new year will be coming along before you know it.

Veterans Day 11:11:11
November 11th, 2011
I love our location in NYC near Madison Square Garden! It means on a day like this Veterans Day, all we need to do is take a short walk over to honor the Veterans that earn our country its security and freedom. All along Fifth Avenue, one branch of the military after the next, represented the best examples of valor and commitment to the principles and values of the United States. These men and women make many sacrifices to do their job right so we can safely enjoy the benefits of being American. The Meier Group proudly salutes you!

An Apple and a Dream
October 7th, 2011
This week the world lost a person who re-invented over and over again how its inhabitants communicate, learn and play. Not only did Steve Jobs change the art of communication with Apple products, he changed the way we connect with the very products themselves. He focused on every detail and nuance in order to go beyond a “production line” of computer gadgets, and gave birth to them in the way an artist does with her art, a director with her film and a composer with his symphony. He wanted us to feel the love he and his company put into their Mac creations, generation after generation. We did. I am writing this entry from my MacBook Pro and loving every second of it.
As his colleagues and employees put it, Jobs was a perfectionist. He kept every new Mac creation under wraps until it was ready for its “birth.” He will be forever remembered as a visionary because he had sharp instincts when it came to doing what he loved to do. And as he emphasized in the amazing commencement speech at Stanford which has been going around the web, if you love your work you will excel at it. The most important thing is to never settle for anything less than doing what you love.
I take to heart those pearls of wisdom from a man who had his struggles but never settled for less than his true love. I love what I do! Every time I work with great people on their property, I consider it an opportunity to design the best outcome. I study the market, I study the property, its aesthetics good and bad. When it is ready to be presented in its best light to be sold, I know I will get the best outcome and help my clients evolve to new circumstances in their life. Whether it’s a move to a new location or selling an investment, I love producing the opportunity for the one constant in life to flourish: that constant is change. Steve Jobs did this on a global and likely immeasurable scale.
We do what we can do. But every effort to be harbingers of positive change is a step in the right direction. Steve Jobs excelled at his passion, and he is an inspiration for all of us to never stop striving for the best when it comes to our own personal passions.

High On Fashion in NYC
September 23rd, 2011
September 8, 2011 was an incredible night that took me by surprise. It was the world’s annual Fashion’s Night Out, a night where fashion retailers create some great events for their consumers. It started with a call I received about there being a lot of celebrities in Macys, so I went to take a look. Macy’s managed to bring on Tommy Hilfiger and the Broadway cast of “Chicago” who also gave us a taste of their performance. They were generously serving beer and wine, and let’s just say that started the evening on a good note.

Next I went across the street to Sephora where I was given a bottle of Moet, a chocolate covered lollypop filled with ice cream and a raffle ticket. Unfortunately I lost, so it was time to move on. Fashions Night Out actually spanned over 1,000 retailers in NYC alone, so the plan was to hit as many locations as possible. I jumped Downtown to SoHo and quickly learned it was a smart move. The parties there were hot, and every store had its own club like atmosphere. They featured DJ’s, full bars and a lot of excitement. It truly was one of those nights where you just feel so lucky to live in New York. One minute I am about to head home for dinner, and the next, I’m having a blast at Fashion Night out in NYC!
